Yelp Implements Active Cleanup Alerts When a Business Review Hits the News – Tituss Burgess Vs Frank’s Express

Tituss Burgess from the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, tangled with one of the infamous NYC Moving crooks companies and wrote this blistering review that has gone viral. The review tells of incompetence, extortion and worse. (h/t to Gerry Foster for the story)

The story is interesting in its own right but it has been covered well elsewhere from Buzzfeed to Entertainment Weekly and the NY Daily News.

When A Yelp Review Hits The Media, Yelp Steps In?

What I found of unique interest was how Yelp was handling the situation on Frank’s Express Yelp page where the predictable flood of political reviews started appearing. Yelp has imposed an “Active Clean Up Alert” and monitoring. (This may have existed previously but it is the first that I noticed it.)

They note:

This business recently made waves in the news, which often means that people come to this page to post their views on the news.

While we don’t take a stand one way or the other when it comes to these news events, we do work to remove both positive and negative posts that appear to be motivated more by the news coverage itself than the reviewer’s personal consumer experience with the business.

As a result, your posts to this page may be removed as part of our cleanup process beginning Wednesday, July 13, 2016, but you should feel free to post your thoughts about the recent media coverage for this business on Yelp Talk at any time.

This is the first time I have seen Yelp make a proactive attempt to preempt the many reviews that will come in. And while I have no love lost I think it a good move on Yelp’s part to keep the review world focused on actual reviews of a business’s quality.

Google and Facebook would do well to implement a similar policy.
